This past weekend was all about celebrating Creole culture up north, and Hotel The Champs got right into the festive spirit! Since we needed to pick up some fresh produce for the restaurant, Lise decided to join in the fun at the Market with a Difference.

The atmosphere was buzzing, with everyone showcasing their beautiful traditional Madras clothing in honor of Creole month.

What a lively celebration!

Have you ever wondered about the fascinating history of Madras fabric in the Caribbean? Well, it turns out that this vibrant fabric has quite a story! During a time when women in the Caribbean had to cover their hair due to the "Tignon Law", 'muchoir madras," an Indian cotton, gained popularity among Creole women.

This lovely material soon took the place of the traditional white head kerchief, and Creole women began to creatively use it for their headscarves (Foulards) and skirts (Jupe). Isn’t it amazing how clothing can reflect cultural history?
