Hans and Lise know how to take advantage of life in Dominica and enjoy exploring the nature trails on Sunday mornings, which allows them to offer firsthand information to their guests staying at Hotel The Champs. Recently, they hiked Segment 10 of the Waitukubuli National Trail.

Segment 10 is one of the shortest and easiest segments of the Waitukubuli National Trail. It follows the route of an old farmers' road from the heights above Colihaut over to Syndicate, which continues through the foothills of Morne Diablotin, Dominica’s tallest mountain.

Approximately 7km, hiking time 2 - 3 hours. Access to the start is a little out of the way and can be approached starting from either end of the loop road behind Colihaut. From the trailhead, the path heads slightly inland and makes its way over a couple of ridges on fairly easy terrain before returning to the road in the area around Syndicate estate, a farm area. Syndicate is also a well-known parrot habitat, home to the two endemic and extremely rare Amazona parrots known as the Sisserou (Amazona Imperialis), the national bird of Dominica, and the Jaco (Amazona Arausiaca), which are found nowhere else in the world.

Milton Waterfall is another popular site to visit in Syndicate.
Segment 10 finishes at the Syndicate Nature Trail office. Due to the short length of this trail, hikers often continue on Segment 11 to Picard, which is 14km and takes 3 - 5 hours.
If you are interested in hiking the northern trails of the Waitukubuli National Trail, Hotel The Champs offers you the services to explore nature trails and relax in luxury at the end of the day.
