It is said that Dominica has a river for every day of the year, but there is only one river everyone is talking about, the Indian River.
The Indian River is a beautiful waterway situated in Portsmouth, the northern part of Dominica. It is a popular tourist attraction that offers a serene experience, where visitors can take a guided tour on a rowboat through the lush mangrove forest that surrounds the river.
The Indian River got its name from the Kalinago (Carib Indian) who lived along the banks and used the river as an access route to the Caribbean Sea. The river was important to their livelihood as they used it to transport goods for trade with sailors and along the island chain.

The Indian River, Calypso's Cottage, has also featured in the Hollywood blockbuster film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

A tour of the Indian River usually includes a pit stop at the Bush Bar, popular for its bush rum Dynamite, which some call “pure wickedness”.

Only a 10-minute drive or 30-minute walk from Hotel The Champs, you can enjoy the lush scenery of mangroves, majestic Bwa Mang trees, palms, and other vegetation. The area is home to diverse bird species such as herons and kingfishers. The Indian River is an excellent choice for a relaxing day out exploring nature.
